Here’s a nice detour for our blog!  One of my favourite cousins asked me to help her with her essay for Health Law.  It’s been about five years since I’ve written a law essay, but I put some time into helping her out anyway.  The following post is the culmination of fifty minutes rough work – it’s not pretty, I haven’t worried much about the formatting or the flow; it’s just a brain-dump.  Standard “don’t rely on this” disclaimer applies.  If you found this page because you need help writing your law essay, I hope it helps!  If it does, please take the time to post a comment. We installed an OpenBravo Point of Sale system for one of our clients last year.  Things have been working fairly well for them, except they had a problem with one of their printers going offline every so often.  Everything would be going along fine, then suddenly the printer would stop printing orders. The problem is, the kitchen printer isn’t visible from the bar, so nobody would notice for possibly five or ten minutes. The printer would come back online by itself after a while, or the wait staff would be forced to reboot the POS system. Not good.  Here’s how we fixed it. Read More »

When you’re working with computers on a regular basis, it’s important that you take the appropriate measures to protect yourself. I really like clean URLs.  For example, I far prefer a URL like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidy over something like http://www.gravitycomputing.co.nz/cgi-bin/gen.pl?id=4&category=M753n&style=gw3b (don’t even try it, that’s a fake link).  For me, it’s a matter of ‘the tidier the better’, because the less in the URL, the less people have to remember when they try to find things again.

I’m really looking forward to Kiwi PyCon 2011 (nz.pycon.org) coming up at the end of August, in Wellington.  Kiwi PyCon is an conference dedicated, mainly, to the Python programming language.  Jordan and I went last year, to Kiwi PyCon 2010 which was held in beautiful Waitangi, Northland.  It was a great conference, with a very friendly atmosphere and some excellent talks.

This year, I’ve been fortunate enough for a presentation of mine to be accepted for the conference!  That leaves me doubly-excited, and of course, now I really need to knuckle down and finish getting my talk together.  Here’s the synopsis: Read More »

A few days ago, Joel Spolsky of Fog Creek Software posted a fantastic guide on fairly allocating ownership when starting up a new company.  After having gone through this sort of thing a couple times, I found his post particularly poignant.  I’ve reposted it here in all it’s glory.  If you’re thinking about forming a startup company, consider this a must-read! Do you ever find yourself using the same programs over and over? You could create a desktop shortcut for each of them, but this often leaves your desktop cluttered and not very productive. A more favourable alternative is to use custom shortcuts. Read More »

As we all know, the recent seismic activity around Christchurch has had a tremendous impact on the Canterbury region, with life just now starting to return to normality. There are a lot of small businesses in the region that have suffered significant damage, and many of them will need plenty of assistance to get back on their feet. Read More »
